The UK and its G7 partners have issued a joint call to action on post-quantum cryptography, highlighting the risks quantum computing poses to current public-key encryption. The statement adds international weight to existing NCSC guidance on migration timelines.

The G7 cyber security working group has issued a joint call to action urging organisations to begin their transition to post-quantum cryptography (PQC), to help protect encrypted data against the future threat posed by quantum computing.

The UK government has been taking part in the working group to highlight the growing risks that quantum computing poses to the public-key cryptography in widespread use today. The call to action has been signed by the UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States, and the full statement is available from France's national cyber security agency, ANSSI.

For UK organisations, the National Cyber Security Centre has already published guidance on PQC migration timelines, setting out the activities organisations need to carry out to migrate safely over the coming years. The G7 statement reinforces that guidance at an international level.

Organisations planning their cryptographic migration should review the NCSC's PQC migration guidance.
